The flag of Banda's party (the Malawi Congress
Party) looks quite different, and was the basis for the present Malawi
flag.
Your UFE is not the army flag.
Crampton's Complete Guide of Flags (1989) has a description
of a military flag of Malawi:
"Red with a yellow climbing lion above the sun and wavy bars like in
the crest". (is that a different flag - there is no image -?)
It is of course not the presidential flag
- so perhaps a personal flag of Dr Hastings Banda, aka Ngwazi Dr.H. Kamuzu
Banda...
Ah well - another Central African mystery!

I used to live in Malawi, and I do remember this flag, wel it was usually
printed on hard board and hung on poles, but I never saw it as a flag as
on a cloth!
I saw this flag when ever there was a inportant confrence or when president
Banda came driving past somewhere, but I only ever saw it when president
Banda was president, never saw it after election of Muluzi!
