This is one of the villages in the Golan Heights, an area of Syria occupied by Israel since 1967 and later annexed. Under Israeli law and de facto, the Golan Heights are part of Israel. International law and the United Nations still recognize the Golan Heights as part of Syria.

Local Council Katzrin is named after an ancient city whose ruins are nearby, and its nickname is 'capital of the Golan'. It is situated in the centre of the Golan Heights in area that was siezed from Syria in 1967. Est. 1977. Pop. 6,500. On the city hall is a white flag with yellow emblem, inscriptions above and below the emblem. Elsewhere there is also a blue flag with white emblem. The municipal emblem has not been published in the official gazette (Rashumot) and is thus unofficial. Source: author's own observation, 2 October 2001; council website.
