Remarks: The first edition of the famous "Boutell’s Heraldry", with many reprints including the most recent one by Warne [blt73].

A publishing saga almost as complicated than Flags of the World. The Reverend Charles Boutell wrote The Manual of Heraldry in 1863; however, the second edition, published in the same year, was entitled Heraldry, Historical and Popular. A third edition was published in 1864.

Not long afterwards, he wrote English heraldry, published in 1867; this went to a second edition in 1871, a third in 1892 (edited by the Reverend S. T. Aveling), and a fourth in 1907, edited by A. C. Fox-Davies.

In 1931, V. Wheeler-Holohan wrote an edition which combined elements from both books, and called it Boutell’s Manual of Heraldry. This was revised by C. W. Scott-Giles in 1950, as Boutell’s Heraldry. J. P. Brook-Little assisted Scott-Giles with the 1963 and 1966 editions, before becoming editor for the 1970, 1978 and 1982 (the final) editions.
